CHAPTER 6

The cadets slept long and deep, arising late in the morning, rejuvenated. They sat around their beds, discussing what they knew so far.

“We don’t have a choice,” Jaxon said. “This is one of the worst decisions we’ve made since we entered the Academy. If we fail, we all die.” He covered his face with his hands, thinking of how much worse things could get. If they all died here, they would go from being the Academy’s star team, to being the ones lost in an important mission. He wanted to die in glory, but this wasn’t so glorious.

“Don’t be so negative. I’m sure Alex has a plan.” Nia glanced in Alex’s direction. She was afraid, too, inwardly fidgety and outwardly searching for a straightforward way out. “Right?”

Alex adjusted his posture on the bed, drawing his legs closer to himself. “I think we should give it a shot. We have some technology on the spacecraft that we can harness in creating stronger force fields, especially given the energy resources they have.”

“We can also use the towers, I suppose,” Jaxon said. “I think if I can get to one, I can tinker with it and figure out how it works.”

“And what if all this doesn’t work?” Yasu asked. He had been quiet for a long time, carefully translating the reports about the entity from times past. Though the information was arranged unfamiliarly, making him re-read various sections multiple times, he could gather that they had tried to use the same methods from the past, and it hadn’t worked. “What if this thing is now too strong? Especially since we have no experience with it?”

“I think someone needs to go to the Federation,” Nia said.

“Someone?” Alex gave her a sharp look.

“I volunteer. I can speak to Xev and Lady Raya, and we’ll go together to the Federation and plead with them for help. The stakes are too high. We can’t base all our actions on the hope that we successfully set up force fields here. We need to make other proactive decisions.”

Jaxon didn’t like this plan. “Why you? What if something happens to you when you go?”

Nia fixed him with a blank stare. “Something happens to me in what way?”

Jaxon shook his head with some aggression. “I don’t know. We just can’t place you on a ship going away without the rest of us. Let Yasu go instead.”

Now, the three others stared at him in silent confusion. Nia broke through the quietness. “I think I can handle myself, Jaxon. I want to go, partially because the Federation could really help them out, but mostly because I would love to learn more about the rest of the politics in this sector.”

To that, Jaxon had no reply. He didn’t want to lose any of his friends, but the thought of losing Nia hurt much more. She was the first friend he made in the Academy, sitting next to her in the orientation hall and following her from there on out. Though he wished he
